Kwazies

We were commissioned to design a custom lettering mark for Ryan Mitchell's side project "The Kwazies Experiment"—A short fictional film about a highly intelligent species of animals that have stood upright for the past few generations, attempting to integrate into human society. The mark we were requested to make needed to portray a raw and violent characteristic while remaining legible as a lettermark.

2011 Emily Carr Degree Exhibition Catalogue

The 2011 Emily Carr Graduation Exhibition was a group project initiated by fourteen graduating design students.

Our team decided to focus on the concept of “the verge”—communicating the excitement and anticipation of the moment before graduation/completion.

This concept took the visual form of objects and paint hanging in the air to reflect the idea of the short moment before an occurrence.

Taking the final concept and visual language, our team took on different roles to carry the branding through to various deliverables.

Our involvement consisted of the branding of the exhibition as well as the art direction for both the print and web catalogue.

Lunisolar Calendar

In celebration of the 2012 Chinese New Year, we wanted to create a limited edition calendar that combines a traditional Chinese layout with a minimalistic aesthetic.

Following traditional Chinese convention, this lunisolar calendar is formatted in vertical columns from top to bottom. The first column (displaying the days of the week) is on the right side of the page, and the days run towards the left. The moon phases, represented with symbols in this calendar, are especially important in the Chinese calendar as they mark traditional East Asian holidays such as the Chinese New Year.

51st CCCWC

In the winter of 2011, we had the opportunity of working with the planning committee for the 51st Canada Chinese Christian Winter Conference. Working with the conference theme title “Yet His Love Goes Further Still,” we developed our concept based on a comparison between the physical nature of the sun and characteristics of God in Christianity.

Our observations included of how the sun is both distant from the earth and yet still reaches it to bring light, warmth, and life. These aspects relate similarly to the presence of God who is omnipresent. Our concept became the main motivation for the selection and application of the images and the placement of type that purposely bleeds off the page. This project includes an array of deliverables including branding, print and screen collateral as well as promotional material.

Fabrica

Fabrica is a deceptively simple sans serif typeface optimized for screen display on handheld devices. With its optimal quality and legibility, Fabrica proves to be highly efficient for small screens. Its details are drawn from the more systematic constructed Neo-Grotesques, giving it a neutral tone of voice. Above all, Fabrica’s beauty is found in its functionality.

Sight & Sound

Sight & Sound was done in collaboration with Joey Chung and Eunji Choi. The project objective was to creatively categorize image and content concerning graphic design around the world. We chose to categorize content by ways of themes that summarized the movement of graphic design in a particular nation and time period.

An important aspect of our project is the marriage between visual and audio language. In using songs for the featured country, we utilize this element of sound to summarize the emotions of a nation’s story at the time period selected. Also included in this project is an array of visual translations of the songs. This was an intuitive and experimental exercise. To bring a level of order to these graphic spreads, we chose to use simple graphical elements to represent an audio sound, and repeated it accordingly.
